PROJECT: V/LINE – MELTON VIADUCT STRUCTURAL INSPECTIONS

Project highlights included

V/Line engaged Brunton Engineering & Construction to undertake detailed investigation of the heritage-listed Melton Viaduct at Melton, Victoria. Originally constructed for Victorian Railways in 1886, the structure uniquely displays late 19th-century advances in bridge design and construction.

Comprised entirely of wrought iron, the superstructure is formed by four riveted double-lattice truss girders, supporting twin sets of cross girders and a steel trough deck bearing onto wrought iron lattice trestle piers. At an impressive 375m long, the bridge sits 40m above Melton Reservoir. This demanding project involved Brunton Engineering & Construction staff working with rope access crews over a six-month period to perform periodic checks of the viaduct’s structural connections.

The survey reported on the adequacy of thousands of structural fasteners as well as approximately 100 tie braces. This vital information was then forwarded to a leading engineering consultancy as part of the viaduct’s structural health monitoring regime.

  • Analysis and interpretation of existing structure to create custom checklists
  • Diligently checking and reporting on 3,000 structural connections
  • Effective performance of several multi-day inspections over a six- month period to assess structural integrity
  • Interpretation of checklists and provision of full structural health report to establish ongoing maintenance needs
  • Performance of required replacement works and on-the-job maintenance.

PROJECT: ASALEO CARE
PALLETISING SYSTEM BRIDGE

PROJECT OVERVIEW

During 2013, Brunton Engineering & Construction was engaged for the replacement of an antiquated palletising system bridge that conveys goods from the production area to the dispatch area.

This project included:

  • Surveys, 3D modelling and production of full fabrication drawings
  • Building extensions to existing production and dispatch areas during periods of plant operation
  • Design and construction of a 40m hollow-section truss bridge
  • Delivery of bridge on oversized escorted truck loads from workshop to site
  • Installation of bridge combining a mobile Franna and 200-tonne cranes with access from boom and scissor lifts during a single 14-hour period
  • Fit-out of mechanical elevators, lowerators and 56m of roller conveyors.
