V/LINE – MOUNT EMU CREEK BRIDGE

SUMMARY

In April 2018, Brunton Engineering & Construction staff completed replacement of the 120m Mount Emu Creek rail bridge during a nine-day occupation.

SUMMARY

The structural installation phase of the project was completed in five days while the track works phase added another two days.

This project involved:

  • Surveying of existing bridge dimensions and 3D fabrication design of the replacement structural works
  • Fabrication and galvanising of the replacement structural steelwork bridge decks comprising over 10,000 parts and 160t
  • The removal of around 200m of broad gauge track and the recycling of sixteen redundant bridge spans
  • The relocation of the heritage-listed river span to our Somerton workshop where remediation of corrosion was completed over two days of around the clock shifts
  • Installation of new bearing plates with significant epoxy embedments at fifteen piers and two abutments
  • Pre-assembly and installation of replacement spans comprised of steel beams, steel trough decking, formed channel kerbs, walkway and handrail
  • Upgrades to two adjacent level crossing including sleeper replacement, minor track lifts and asphalt reinstatement
  • Reinstatement of the track incorporating a 300mm track lift, new concrete sleepers, tamping and regulating
