Together, both organisations are working together on the North East Rail Line Upgrade project, with a primary goal of strengthen the capacity to carry double-stacked containers and take trucks off the road by putting the cargo onto trains.

Our Solution

  • To kick off this project, Brunton carried extensive onsite, including geotechnical testing and site survey to collect raw data.
  • ARTC supplied the bridge design for Brunton to use and make amenable to specific locations along the rail network.
  • The team worked in the unique ‘linear ecosystem’ of the rail corridor. Each location required access for heavy vehicle transportation through sensitive environments and poor-quality access routes.
  • Brunton built new access roads to reduce hazards with the heavy loads.
  • The team initiated weekly 60-hour shuts, where up to four discrete round-the-clock crews replaced the existing timber bridges with the new prestressed concrete bridge spans.

Our Results

Brunton was initially contracted to construct around sixty locations. But due to COVID-19 shutting down train operations, the project expanded to over one hundred locations. The team performed ten years of rail upgrades in a single year.

Brunton’s internal approach for lift-planning centres around ensuring geotechnical conditions are sound. This let the team construct adaptative safe-working platforms to give our clients full peace of mind.
